Background
Since 2002 governments in the UK have passed legislation to ban:
- tobacco advertising and sponsorship
- smoking in all enclosed public places (including every pub and private members' club)
- cigarette vending machines and the
- display of tobacco in shops and other retail outlets
Other anti-smoking initiatives have included graphic health warnings on packs and increasing the duty on tobacco to record levels.
Now, without any consultation with the British people, unaccountable bureaucrats in the European Union have proposed even more regulations including the prohibition of products that British consumers have been able to purchase and consume, quite legally, for the best part of a century.
The European Commission’s revised Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) includes a ban on ‘slim’ and menthol cigarettes, a ban on smaller pouch sizes for roll your own tobacco, and unnecessarily restrictive regulations on the size and shape of cigarette packets.
They even want to increase the size of picture health warnings (to cover up to 75 per cent of the packet, front and back), as if the current warnings aren’t big enough!
